Comment on Do Catholics Worship Mary? For me, I believe Mary is the gateway to heaven, because she is in the kitchen of the Lord- just as as a mother who will not refuse her child food so far as she is in the kitchen, Mary who is in the kitchen of God will always intercede for us to grant us the necessary graces we need to get to our heavenly home. I therefore urge with all Catholics to recite the Holy Rosary daily and they will not regret they do.

My Dad was an alcoholic and I have seen first-hand how alcohol can ruin relationships. I have vowed, from a young age, that I would never allow alcohol to abuse me or my loved ones. And I am blessed to say that, at the age of 37, I have never been drunk. I do not say this to boast, but to encourage others.

Some men and women are infertile and still get married. Are you saying they shouldn’t get married? Are you saying their marriage is any less valid because they cannot bear children? What exactly are you saying? Because from what I’ve seen, parenthood does not necessarily come along with marriage, it is merely one potential facet.

And then the industry became nothing, but “Praise & Worship,” which makes me nauseous. I still listen to a lot of Christian Hip-Hop (like Dy-Verse (a.k.a. Nico Santana), manChild (formerly of Mars Ill), Lecrae, Val Mural, TobyMac, KJ-52, John Reuben, Pigeon John, Fr. Pontifex, SPZRKT, and Trip Lee. I also listen to some of the Heavier Stuff (like Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, Pillar, 12 Stones, Kutless & Dennis Zender to name a few). I do like some softer stuff, (like Joe Zambon, Emma Fradd, Kevin Heider, Paul J. Kim, Table4Twelve, Ike Ndolo, and Donny Todd, to name a few).

I started a page on Twitter and Facebook called “Holly Roadies” if you would like to give it a follow.

May I suggest an addendum: Kathleen Beckman. She is the founder of the Foundation of for Prayer for Priests 2014. Her book and the foundation are a response from the Congregation of the Clergy’s 2007/2012 document Eucharistic Adoration for the Sanctification of Priests and Spiritual Maternity. Document can be found at booksforcatholics.com (online versions exist) and book – Praying for Priests at Sophia Press or Amazon. Website is http://www.foundationforpriests.org. This was created by a seminarian and is amazing! I learn every time I visit. Our priests are walking targets for all forms of attack. Please look into these resources and PRAY often for our priests and seminarians!!! IHS, Mary J.

Comment on 6 Reasons Why Praying The “Our Father” Is Offensive And Rude by Alison Beil https://catholic-link.org/the-lords-prayer-in-the-uk/#comment-117124 Sat, 13 Aug 2016 22:34:06 +0000 https://catholic-link.org/?p=12493#comment-117124 I wish you would change the title of this article to “Reasons why some deem the Lord’s Prayer offensive and rude” It seems to me that the Holy Spirit in God’s Holy Word given us by and from Jesus and his Apostolic succession Himself, has also advised us to tell Satan we reject it – reject all it’s offence – all it’s demons and demonic ideas – all it’s deceits and persistent conscious denial of God’s Almighty and Eternal Omniscience and Love for us who know and believe on Him and are baptized. Recently there was also a Priest, who evidently was heard to say “begone Satan” as he was being killed by terrorists.

By order.

Like, Carmelites vs Ursulines (or combos like two Carmelites vs five sisters of St. Joseph), and let people place bets and all that. 20% of the take goes to the Church.

dear Rebecca,

thank you so much for this comment- I’m so sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you- the comment was kind of hidden on our webpage but here I am now! Your comment moved me very much and I want to thank you for taking the time to leave it. I really understand where you are coming from because I wrote this article from a very personal place- that of a depression I had a few years ago where my faith and live was stifled in my desperation to be holy. I could no longer love, because I took away any freedom I had. Now I have freedom again- freedom to make the right choices with my faith, freedom to try and fail, freedom to seek forgiveness. The Lord has been very gentle with me and brought me, like a true father, back home. Your comment has really helped me today, and please know I am praying for you as we walk this road together!

All my love back from the other side of the world too!
Ruth

Your article was exactly all of me in the past 2/3 months. I was actually getting more and more depressed because I stifled my attempts to love and receive love by my own self desire to be holy. There were a lot of lost opportunities and regrets, including drawing the happiness out of my family, ruining relationships with my friends because I wasn’t truly myself, and failing a clinical placement. I was judgemental and looked with displeasure at the life of my colleagues who didnt believe in the church. Little did I realize that this hatred would soon be my downfall.
My attempt to be Holy led me to feeling so stressed tht I needed to help every one for the sake of their salvation! I put it upon myself to make every one happy in that moment that I neglected my own happiness and welfare, because I believed in suffering to be holy.
Ruth, your article had the effect of breaking down all of my walls. It told me that the best way to love, was to love like myself. Trying to love like St Teresa by reading a novel about her isn’t going to make me love more. Love is an ongoing action which I have to actively choose in every moment. Knowing that holiness doesnt have to be a forceful effort was the best gift that could ever happen to me.
May God bless you abundantly for using the gift of writing to heal others <3 Keep those articles comin'

All of my love from the other end of the world
Rebecca

Catholic Link (whoever you are) gets wooed by Lady Gaga (whoever she is). If you think her response was touching, read the lives of the saints and the great spiritual classics. To struggle with temptations is one thing; actively promoting and living anti-Catholic values is something else. Her life is utterly devoid of evidence of conversion and repentance. Some things can be judged by the eyes, especially the eyes of faith.

We do not have open communion if that is what the priest by way of the Pope’s words wrongly misled her into thinking. Your soul has to be in a state of grace (no mortal sin) to receive the God who made us. Nothing about her seems to indicate she is ready to denounce her former life and clothe herself in humility, where God is found, where God likes to commune – with the meek and not the proud. She formerly has been leading little ones astray – woe to these! I pray she can “re-vert” to the Catholic faith. Don’t like the way she casually throws around her rosary in the photo and stands with the priest for a public photo. We have a responsibility to correct one another without wrongly being accused of “judging” which is how the devil likes to shut us out from speaking. It must always be done lovingly, which is how my post is intended. And by the way, Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on ME, a sinner.

It’s just so reassuring to hear that a man of another culture, far away has experienced so many of what I, a West African Catholic woman has. I would love to hear your wife’s perspective 😉 also!! I do feel blessed though abour how God is revealing the ” just love him” to me, its pathetic that I was so focused on myself for all these years, my needs, my expectations and wants. I feel so much freer when the focus is off me. However, it is still a struggle at times, but I know God’s grace and Our Lady are there to help, if I let them!

The struggle isn’t worth it.” because my body is doing what it does naturally- i.e. going through the cycle of fertility- and my heart is yearning for something else, something much greater that giving in just does not bring.

Thank you for writing this, and sharing your thoughts and feelings. You are not alone in your struggle. Being single is not always fun, I guess neither is being in a relationship, and being single and chaste is definitely not always fun, but the fruits are worth it.

God bless you.

I am glad to hear that you are feeling fulfilled in your single life. I would like to share a word of encouragement and a word of advice. First, though there may be a general silence toward our sexualized culture in which pornography is the norm, more and more people are acknowledging the harm caused by de-contextualizing sexual acts from the loving married life (I even read a blog of someone claiming not to be “a religious person” who was fed up with the degradation of sex). Second, I want to offer the words of a friend of mine who recently spoke on the topic of vocation. His point was that marriage need not be seen as a default vocation. Though many of us will be called to marry, this is not the “first option” after which other options are discerned. We all have individual calls centered in the universal call to love and know God. We are all called to love, for love is not limited to the romantic love of courtship and marriage.

The very same people become the wicked spouses, bad girlfriends/boyfriends, and corrupt officials of society.

That it’s true for all Popes. And for all priests who strive to live their lives according to the example of the Pope. And for all Christians who also strive to follow his holy example.
I pray especially that they come to realize that all the good they witness about the pope comes from the one who established the papacy nearly 2,000 years ago: Jesus. Jesus is the source of the love and compassion they admire and He wishes nothing more than to share all the love of his heart with them. <3

The general law does not specify the precise time after which Sunday Mass is possible.

As an observant Catholic, I read Scripture regularly and have yet to find anything anywhere that does not deepen my appreciation for the Church’s wisdom in all her teachings and deepen my faith the Church was instituted by Christ our King for the salvation of souls. The Bible does not contradict one iota of Catholic teaching. It simply does not. A faithful Catholic could read the King James Bible every day until the Last Judgement and would find nothing in there that contradicts Catholic teaching.
To criticism that Catholics generally do not read or appreciate Scripture I reply, “Correct indeed!” But my sincere hope is that more Catholics will begin to do so and deepen their faith and love of our holy Church thereby.

Catholics are obligated to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. We are obligated to receive Jesus in the Eucharist once a year during Easter. We should do both as often as possible, so long as we do not receive Communion while in a state of mortal sin or without fasting. (as correctly stated in Question 3)

Question 7 does not list Fr. Damian of Molokai, the given answer.

So many holes in this article, only the Sheeps would read it like a bible (pun intended)

1 – take a look at kids with single parents, are you suggesting that they are ALL problematic? How about step parents? You honestly think that it’s ALWAYS better to have both Father and Mother?

2 – you are essentially degrading female in this society. And basically call them a cow or a meal plan. I can tell you a lot of Women I know is more masculine than Men mentally. But you

3 – you are generalizing Boys and Girls in general, which again contradicts your argument. What happens when a Girl have more of the Boy’s characteristic? or vice versa? d

4 – Any proof of this? You make it sounds like a fact, but it’s only a guess at most about “gay gene” in ancient Greek. Who are you or other to say what choices are acceptable and what’s not. Stop trying to play God.

5 – Another slippery slope statement, if all parties are ok with polygamy, then it’s THEIR choice. Most of these Polygamy goes to church too you know.
History does not equate to Wisdom, please don’t mix the two together. It’s been hundreds of years that they drown witches, is that practice still valid?

EDIT: There is another proverb: “Who is strong? One who overpowers his inclinations… Who is rich? One who is satisfied with his lot… Who is honorable? One who honors his
fellows.” A man cannot be any of these things without partaking in a journey and facing life’s many challenges.

Comment on Is There More To Life Than Your #Goals? by Anonymous https://catholic-link.org/apostolate-evangelization-faith-and-live-jesus-christ/#comment-50748 Sun, 01 Feb 2015 21:04:45 +0000 http://en.catholic-link.com/?p=6213#comment-50748 Another solid thought provoking article, but I would like to add another question into the mix. Much here seems to be focused on attaining the dream and the move forward, but what about the journey? This brings up the necessary but difficult dichotomy of living a life of purpose while at the same time appreciating the adventure of the day to day. It has been said that “If you don’t know what you’re living for, you haven’t yet lived.” And yet, we are so focused on creating this life of purpose that we aren’t really living. We are ignoring the present moment, and thus ignorant of God’s wonders in our world. What would it mean to live well, to live a life of purpose? Another quote makes this self-explanatory: “If you are not a better person tomorrow than you are today, what need have you for a tomorrow?”
There is even more evidence regarding the importance of the journey. “A righteous man falls down seven times and gets up.” – King Solomon, Proverbs, 24:16. The goal is never spoken of because the journey is what matters. This creates life’s balance. Life is not meant to be comfortable or easy, and we, as humans, must accept that. If we were meant to be comfortable we could lie in bed all day doing nothing. And yet, if we did so, our muscles would atrophy and our mind would be idle. But when we get up, when we work hard through pain and struggle, we come out stronger because of it. Regardless of the dream that we have set out to achieve, the most important part is surviving and learning from the journey.

Comment on Does Your Media Use Make You More Fully Alive? by Anonymous https://catholic-link.org/can-we-auto-correct-humanity-catholic-video/#comment-50630 Sun, 01 Feb 2015 03:18:09 +0000 http://en.catholic-link.com/?p=6738#comment-50630 First i would just like to say, great article and great video! And I completely agree with everything you wrote, but would like to take it a step further because I worry that media and social networks not only make us act a certain way because of a want to adhere to what you call a social perception, but it also engulfs humanity completely and prevents us from seeing everyday miracles. As you wrote, we are responsible for preventing these technologies from using us instead of the other way around. But how is this possible without taking it out of our lives completely? In this world, in God’s world, how are we supposed to attain a sense of spirituality while we are glued to our computer screens? The idea of radical amazement seems impossible in a technologically modern world. The author defines the term: “Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement. ….get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.” In essence, every conversation should be a blessing. The simple fact that we are here and present and can relate to each other and love each other is a blessing. The touch, the sense of self and the sense of community is all a blessing, and how much of that is lost when we are looking at screens, for, as noted by the New York Times, eight and a half hours a day? And yet, we cannot deny the times we live in today. How will religion adapt to such a change without going through declines in religiosity experienced by every faith in the past? The same author writes, “religion declined not because it was refuted, but because it became irrelevant, dull, oppressive, insipid. When faith is completely replaced by creed, worship by discipline, love by habit; when the crisis of today is ignored because of the splendor of the past; when faith becomes an heirloom rather than a living fountain; when religion speaks only in the name of authority rather than with the voice of compassion–its message becomes meaningless.” How do we move forward and make religion relevant in the modern world while maintaining our basic faith?
I look forward to your feedback!

Erin, You are most welcome. When I contemplate on the crucifix, I ask God, “What would you not do for your love for humanity?” The crucifix reminds me of the more beautiful and awesome ‘burden’ of God’s love. With His love is His patience. With God, His hand is always extended to us every time we fall.

Madel, Thank you for sharing your experience. This is a powerful witness about allowing God to continually work on us and with us. In our relationship with God, it comforting to know that God takes the initiative. This could definitely happen in the examination of conscience, where the presence of God transforms it to become really personal – a friendly discourse with God, who calls us to holiness and perfection. May you always be a faithful witness to the beauty of this sacrament for others.

It reminded me of the great love that my God has for me–so pure, so forgiving and eternal. I may be a sinner but God’s love for me is greater than my sin.
And this unfathomable love is what inspires me everyday to strive to be live my life as Christ did.

God’s reconciling work in us doesn’t happen in an instant. As a matter of fact, it can be a long and painful process. But so long as we keep our hearts open to His guidance and grace, He will always have the tender mercies to pick us up when we fall.

I was nervous wondering whether taking advantage of this sacrament would really be helpful to me. I think I was more concerned about how this stranger (the priest) would handle my “case.” Then I reminded myself that I was going to Jesus for healing, it’s not about the conduit of grace (the priest). Am I ever glad I went. My confessor helped me get started with my healing process. Do we not often start our examination of conscience with the verse, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to me?” Sometimes we have to see ourselves as the one to whom the offense was committed and that when it was done to us, Jesus felt the hurt, too. When the one very close to your heart is hurting, don’t you feel the pain, too? Especially when the one committing the offense is someone you love, too, but is not acting accordingly! In this sacrament, we encounter the loving, forgiving God through the priest. We are not only given the gift of forgiveness and healing but also the grace to forgive. Thank you, Lord, for Your loving mercy!

Thanks for your comment, Madel. I agree that God’s grace is certainly the best “beautifier” and that if we allow our hearts to be transformed by his love then our external appearance will reflect this. As we grow in holiness others, as you say, will perceive Christ in us. We must also remember that just as we spend time and effort transforming and perfecting our external appearance, we need to co-operate with grace in order to transform our interior… otherwise there won’t be much to reflect on the outside! I think it is also important to take care of our appearance because we don’t want other people to be so “put off” by our appearance that they don’t stick around long enough to find out what it is that makes us smile What do you think? Do you think we can do this without falling into vanity or becoming extremely worldly and fashion-conscious?

The best beautifier, of course, is allowing God to rule over our hearts and His love run through our veins. Then we have the beauty of wisdom and intelligence, ears that listen and understand, lips that speak kindly and counsel, arms strengthened by fortitude, hands softened by piety and eyes that twinkle with love(fear) of the Lord. Then it will be the aura of God that others will find attractive. And this is what each of us is being called into.

Hey Frank, if I understand you right, your considering acts of kindness to be in a way the ¨building blocks of¨charity? In one sense I agree, in the fact that acts of kindness can lead to charity. Still, personally I would make a more clear and, perhaps, stronger distinction: charity is an act of love, but one that is fruit of having first received love, fundamentally, the love of Christ. Charity is the culmination of ¨Christian love.¨ Kindness, on the other hand, I would see as, you said, something more spontaneous, an act that arise from our natural goodness, a sort of ältruistic¨ act, perhaps because it ¨feels right¨or out of a sense of duty to help others or society in general. In summary, I would question the ¨Life Vest philosophy¨which says that ¨kindness keeps the world afloat.¨ Instead, I would say love, in the first place the love of Christ, and then our acceptance and cooperation with that love, ¨keeps the world afloat,¨and more, ¨spreads the Kingdom of God.¨ I think its a point worth making because many people have given up on the possibility of ¨charity¨ and contented themselves with just being ¨nice¨and doing ¨nice things.¨Charity is something much deeper than kindness.

Comment on When Vanity Strikes! by Ian https://catholic-link.org/when-vanity-strikes/#comment-37 Thu, 15 Nov 2012 05:46:00 +0000 http://en.catholic-link.com/?p=1519#comment-37 Another interesting aspect that is inclusive but not yet discussed is the danger of not hearing God’s plan. (I will put a Christian spin, although that may not have been what the creator of the video intended) God had a plan for Pierre to fall for the red head, and like wise her with him. Cupid I think represents sin better since he deliberately does wrong, and look what happens. He doesn’t feel like doing the work to find the red head and in a tired, worn out state, shoots the first girl he sees… I am sure it seemed like a good idea at the time.

First he has to muscle it, so to speak, to get the fit to work, fudging the cosmic will. Immediately his problems grow exponentially, now if he wants to make things correct he must, pull out the arrow find the red head, shoot her, find the other girl, shoot her again, then find the other guy or coerce them together (it seems as though the scrolls for cupid are time sensitive in that the two are always together at the time he receives them) and shoot him.

This shows so accurately how sin can seem to make so much sense at the time when we commit it. From our perspective although we know “technically” it isn’t right, we don’t see how it could hurt, and usually in contrast seems to be the answer to our problems. In actuality, often to late, we see that the sin was a rupture of a plan far bigger than we can imagine.

One last thought on the video is how cupid’s attitude at the beginning is exasperation and apathy (the creator made a point of portraying that). He doesn’t have any passion for his job and is rather jaded by the whole affair. Perhaps we can all relate to cupid in that our jobs for God, such as prayer, and taking time for apostolate often seem routine or unimportant… yet perhaps, if we had the vantage of Cupid, and could see where all the arrows where meant to go, if you catch my drift… we would realize just how invaluable our work for “the big man” really is.

Thank you so much for this site… I thoroughly enjoy it every time I visit, I just started my own blog actually in part to your inspiration. 🙂

God Bless you

Comment on Our Culture Has No Idea How Much God Loves Us Because We No Longer Understand the Definition of Love by Garrett https://catholic-link.org/love-meaning/#comment-43 Wed, 14 Nov 2012 14:19:00 +0000 http://en.catholic-link.com/?p=1558#comment-43 In reply to Madel Mercado.

“Sometimes, the way we say things get internalized and affect how we think and make decisions.” Very well put Madel! For this reason, we have to be critical and aware of all the catch frases and messages that we receive constantly through means of communication. At the same time, it is fundamental that we learn to speak and think as Christ does! Spending time to understand and interiorize his Word, in the Bible (I would suggest Lexio Divino) and in the Church’s teachings.

I just realized that my native language (which is Filipino) has preserved the original meaning and use of the words “Mahal” or “Pag-ibig.” It’s very possible that other languages have done the same. Sometimes, the way we say things get internalized and affect how we think and make decisions. For example, one can say, “I love roses. When the roses are wilted, I toss them in the trash. I love my partner. When the attributes that made me love him are gone, will I be gone, too?” Unfortunately, this does happen. To love or not to love is a decision not to be confused with emotions, attractions, chemistry or infatuation. To love means to put the well-being of the other person above our personal comfort or gratification. It’s not something that we fall into. It’s more like something that we step into. It’s not something that we fall out of, because once we have decided to love, Christ expects it to be “unto the end.”

Agreed Alex. The question at the bottom of it is, “Who are we?” And while it’s also true that it would be difficult to add anthropological elements into such a short video, I think it is URGENT that we being to offer videos and content that come at it from this angle. The faith offers us a very rich understanding of the human person, and that understanding serves and can speak to everyone, whether they be Catholic or not.

This is probably so as not to alienate those who are on the fence and might be put off by perceived intolerance, but as you rightly say, there is not room for anthropological disucssion in 2 minute video. I think that this whole question of same-sex “marriage” is part of the wider issues surrounding human identity, which is also being challenged by those who wish to choose their gender, or raise their children as ” gender neutral”.
However, I do think that videos of this type can be useful as a starting point for further discussion.

Excellent point. There is a danger in the mentality presented in the video that could lead one to believe that sainthood depends on “doing something” that, as you said, is the next greatest thing. I would propose making both questions, with a slight modification. “Who does God call me to be?” And, at the same time, in order to respond to and fulfill that identity I must act; I must concretely respond to the question, “What does God ask me to do?” These are questions that are intrinsically united, and, as you said, are ones for a founder of a religious community, a businessman or woman, a plumber, an artist, or whomever.

I believe however that saints likely ask themselves “Who do I want to be,” and not “What do I want to be?” Asking what is too explicit. If I want to achieve holiness, I need to live my life in such a way that holiness shines through. I can do that as an accountant or as the founder of a charity for the poor. By asking “Who” it leads my mind to use that creativity to pursue the best course for me without making me feel inadequate if I do not create the next world changing thing. St Therese of Lisieux died at 24 years old. She did not invent anything, but she lived for others and thus became holy in her young years. This is how I want my children to think; be holy by being a good person – the best person you can be – and then follow your heart and creativity in whatever you do! God Bless.

It’s just what I needed to read to help get me back on track.
It is far too easy to get caught up in the daily grind and find that you no longer have God at the center but somewhere of to the side. I have really noticed lately how not enough prayer time has really worn me down in many ways. I’ve been much better about setting time aside for quite prayer at other times during my life, and yet I still have to be reminded of how essential it is in order to be a good vessel for Christ.

One thing that’s been hard for me recently is that my work schedule has made it much harder for me to go to daily Mass, which my husband and I used to do together several times a week. There are so many ways to connect with the Lord, opportunities for prayer and even Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament nearby, but somehow the list of chores, errands, and such that need to be done take precedence.

“Be still and know I am God” is one I’ve adopted as a life verse for me. Far too often I have felt that my worth is based on what I do or say or accomplish, but when I take time to spend with God being still, I’m reminded He knows me better than anyone else and loves me unconditionally for who I am, not what I have done or will do.

Our world of consumerism pushes the second arrow deeper. We don’t only miss out on more important things in life but, because of vanity, we create an illusion of what we should look like. And that’s the reflection that we see in the mirror. May Cupid succeed in pulling the misfired arrow out and instead, shoot it to God. Then we’ll see the kind of beauty that God sees in us and in everything. Worth sharing with faith factor teachers. Thanks.

Wonderful testimony! I find it interesting how many “Feast” days there are in the Liturgical calendar, or how a priest “celebrates” the mass. It’s our Faith that allows us to perceive the blessings all around us! A Catholic is by definition a thankful and thus joyful person!

Our financial condition went very bad that I, as a mother of five, felt so suffocated by it. Then I decided to write down one (and only one) blessing a day. Once I started writing, I started recognizing how much I have to be thankful for. But I limited myself to writing only one a day so I can spend one day enjoying it, thanking the person (if it’s a person), and thanking God. After a few days, my grateful heart no longer felt suffocated but joyful. And I have learned to put my trust in God’s loving providence. How could I doubt that He would continue taking care of me and my family when He had been doing it all my life?

Comment on Apostolic movie recommendation: “Untouchable” (2011) by Garrett https://catholic-link.org/apostolic-movie-recommendation-untouchable-2011/#comment-19 Wed, 31 Oct 2012 17:17:00 +0000 http://en.catholic-link.com/?p=1415#comment-19 In reply to Greg Araujo.

I agree Greg, almost everything that kids are seeing aren’t Catholic, many of them, in fact, go against Faith values. As for the movie, no it is not Catholic. I apologize for not making that clear enough, next time I will do so. It also has a few negative elements as the post mentions at the end. Still, it has various elements that speak positively of the importance and nature of friendship, how to deal with suffering, and how to look at a life a little differently. In general, I would suggest this for an older teen / university age at least.

Unfortunately many of the films being watched by our kids are not catholic.
